Documentary/Social Issues

The power of truth

I am passionate about producing documentaries  – human/social issues in particular.

Documentaries for creating a better society

Documentaries not only provide trusted information about sometimes thorny issues, they tell stories that frame and give human meaning to those issues and provide language for debate across boundaries of difference.

Story telling through film can create a greater awareness and understanding of the human consequences of entrenched social problems, and just as importantly it can highlight possible solutions.

A compelling film connects viewers to its characters and can inspire those viewers to become involved in, or reconnected with making a change in the world.

The hidden problem of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

In 2014 I watched an interesting panel discussion on Maori TV ‘Rethink’. Rebecca Williams, Dr Ian Lambie and Jacinda Ardern were discussing ‘the hidden problem of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASAD) and its impact, and consider what needs to be done to protect future generations’.

I did a bit more research and discovered how widespread the problem is in NZ and discovered there really weren’t any warning messages out there for the public.

I had an idea – I would create a tv advertisment aimed at raising the awareness about the effects of alcohol on pregnancy.

I teamed up with Janet Peters, a registered psychologist and together we self funded, planned and filmed a hard-hitting 60 second TV ad.

We obtained some private funding for a small TV campaign on regional TV starting on the 9th September 2015 which is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day.

The ad was shortened to 30 seconds because of cost. Our aim was to get more funding and put the 60 sec ad on too – but this did not eventuate.  As of January 2016 the ad is available publicly to community groups as a resource/discussion point.
